Cycle Log: Competition Phase Week 2

Week 2 is the second week of the first mesocycle of my Competition Phase for the 2013 racing season (click here for a detailed description of macrocycles, mesocycles and microcycles). Here are the actual workouts with the plan for the week of January 21-27, 2013 (click here to download my plan for the Competition Phase).

Week of 1/21/13 Mon Tues Wed Th Fri Sat Sun Total
Goal 2.5 HC 1.0 AR OFF 1.5 CI OFF 0.5 WU RAT TT 7.5
Actual 1.0 AR 1.5 HC OFF 1.5 CI OFF 0.5 WU RAT TT 6.0

I had my first race of the year! I did a Hill Climb workout on Tuesday at South Mountain Park in Phoenix, my favorite place to ride. I just did one ascent of the 7.0 mile climb. I could have done a second ascent but I was a little tired and wanted to save myself for Sunday’s race. I had a very good Cadence Intervals workout on Thursday with 3 x 15:00 hard efforts (Zone 3) at 95-100 rpm (5 minutes recovery between hard efforts). On Sunday, I did the 20K Race Against Time TT, which was my first high intensity effort in the aero position in 5 months. I rode pretty well, finishing in a time of 33:30 (an estimate – I have not yet received the official results). That’s a pretty slow time for me but not bad for the first race of the season, especially considering I don’t want to peak until May. I have another race this Sunday. As always, I’ll let you know how it goes. Have a great week!
