Lose Weight WITHOUT Dieting: Tip #79: Purchase Your Bagels at the Market

I love bagels. Not only do they taste good, as an endurance athlete, they provide a great source of complex carbohydrates. Add some lean turkey or chicken and it becomes a great post-workout meal with an excellent balance of carbohydrates, fat and protein. Unfortunately, not all bagels are created equally. They can vary dramatically in caloric and nutritional content. That is why I suggest you purchase your bagels at your local market as opposed to a bagel shop like Einstein Brothers or Brueggers. While shops like these offer delicious menu items, you have more control over the nutritional content of your bagel if you purchase it at your local market. For example, a cinnamon raisin bagel at Einstein Brothers has 290 calories (only 10 from fat), 63 carbohydrate grams, 13 grams of sugar and 3 grams of fiber, which is not all that bad. However, you can save 20 calories and increase fiber intake to 10 grams by opting for a Fiber One cinnamon raisin bagel. The smaller size of Lender’s cinnamon raisin bagel drops the calorie count to 200. The moral of this story is that by shopping and reading labels at your local grocery store, you will be able to make a more nutritious bagel selection and save money as well.
