Lose Weight WITHOUT Dieting: Tip #76 – Swap French Fries for a Side Salad

Here is a swap that I started using years ago.  Believe it or not, you can eat a reasonably healthy meal at most fast food restaurants.  You just have to make good choices.  One step you can take is to replace the traditional order of French fries with a side salad.  For example, at McDonald’s a small order of fries has 230 calories, 11 grams of fat (1.5 saturated), 160 mg of sodium and no sugar, which is not that bad if you just have to have French fries.  Of course, it gets worse with the medium (380 calories) and large (500 calories) sizes.  Compare that to a side salad, which comes in at a whopping 20 calories!  However, be careful.  It is very easy to boost the fat and calorie content of your salad with dressings.  For example, one packet of creamy Caesar dressing will add 190 calories and 18 grams of fat (3.5 saturated).  Stick with something like the low-fat balsamic vinaigrette, which has 35 calories and only 2.5 grams of unsaturated fat.  If you were to swap a medium order of fries with a side salad once per day, you would save 325 calories/day or a total of 118,625 calories per year.  That adds up to nearly 34 lbs!
