Lose Weight WITHOUT Dieting: Tip #61 – Downsize Your Tableware

I know what you’re thinking.  You’re probably asking yourself, how am I going to lose weight by getting smaller plates, bowls and cups?  The answer is simple.  Diners who use smaller plates eat smaller portions.  There’s no magic to it, but it’s true.  A recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that when participants chose smaller plates, they reduced their portion size between 9 and 31 percent.  Other studies have reported similar results.  People eat less on smaller dishware and still leave the table sated.  The JCR study also points out that the average size of dinner plates has increased nearly 23 percent since 1900, which is one of the reasons we eat more today!  Don’t want to buy new dinner plates?  Use salad plates instead and replace those supersized drinking glasses with 8 ounce cups.  You can also use smaller bowls to reduce your portion size.
