Cycle Log: Competition Phase Week 17

Week 17 is the second week of the sixth mesocycle of my Competition Phase (click here for a detailed description of macrocyles, mesocycles and microcycles).  I was on the indoor trainer all week because my daughter was home with me for her final week of summer vacation before school begins.  Here are the actual workouts with the plan for the week of August 9 to 15, 2010 (click here to download my plan for the Competition Phase).

Week of 8/9/10 Mon Tues Wed Th Fri Sat Sun Total
Goal 1.0 AR 1.5 SS OFF 2.0 TT 1.0 AR 1.5 VO2/SI OFF 7.0
Actual 1.0 AR 1.25 Tempo OFF 1.25 TT 1.0 AR 1.25 Tempo OFF 5.75

I had another very strong week.  It’s interesting, a few weeks ago I thought I was wearing out and was concerned that I might not be at my best for my final races of the season.  Fortunately, I was wrong.  I am stronger now than I have ever been and hopefully, I will hold this form for another 30 days!  My workouts consisted of Time Trial intervals, two Tempo rides and two Active Recovery sessions.  Once again, I had an all time best Time Trial workout (2 x 15:00 intervals with 5:00 recovery after each hard effort).  I am spinning bigger gears faster than I ever have.  One of the benefits of riding on an indoor trainer is the ability to hold all conditions consistent from one workout to the next.  That makes it easy to tell when you are making progress (think of it as the poor cyclist’s power meter).  My Tempo workouts were very strong as well.  This week is a recovery week but I will do one interval workout on Monday as my only hard effort of the week.  I’ll let you know how it goes.  Have a great week!
