Cycling Performance Tip #19 – Be Clear about the Equipment You Need

In my last few performance tips, I focused on cycling equipment such as helmets, skinsuits, clipless pedals and shoes.  While these tips will be useful for any cyclist or triathlete who is trying to enhance his or her performance, it occurred to me that I ought to begin this discussion by identifying the specific equipment competitive cyclists need to be successful.  I divide this equipment into three categories: Must Have, Should Have and Nice to Have.  As you review these lists, please keep two points in mind.  First, cycling is a very expensive sport (I bet you already know this).  You really do need the items listed under Must Have; however, smart shopping will allow you to get these items less expensively.  For example, you can typically get cycling kits for a lot less money if you order them through your team or club.  Second, you should eventually get the items listed under Should Have, but that doesn’t mean you need to buy them today.  Feel free to put off these purchases until they fit into your budget.  I will discuss individual pieces of equipment in greater detail in upcoming posts.
