Cycle Log: Competition Phase Week 1

Week 1 is the first week of the first mesocycle of my Competition Phase (click here for a detailed description of macrocyles, mesocycles and microcycles).  The race season is at hand and I am really excited.  Here are the actual workouts with the plan for the week of April 19 to 25, 2010 (click here to download my plan for the Competition Phase).

Week of 4/19/10 Mon Tues Wed Th Fri Sat Sun Total
Goal 1.5 HI 1.0 AR OFF 1.5 TT 1.0 AR 2.0 SS OFF 7.0
Actual 1.0 AR 1.5 HI OFF 1.75 TT 1.0 AR 1.75 HC OFF 7.0

I had a nice first week.   After a one-hour Active Recovery ride and strength training session on Monday (my legs were still a bit tired), I did a Hill Interval workout on Tuesday on South Mountain in Phoenix, AZ.  It consisted of one, 7-mile ascent, well in excess of 1,000 feet, to the top of the mountain.  It was my hardest hill climbing yet! Thursday’s Time Trial Intervals consisted of 2 x 6-mile uphill efforts at lactate threshold (uphill, but not nearly as steep as South Mountain, about 425 feet for each effort).  After a recovery ride and strength training session on Friday, I finished the week with a Zone 2 Hill Climb session on Saturday.  All this climbing has left my legs a little tired.  Hopefully, Sunday’s day off will be sufficient for recovery because I have another hard week coming up.   I’ll let you know how it goes!
