10 Big Nutrition Mistakes #6: Relying Too Much on Energy Bars and Energy Drinks

This will be a very short post –sweet and simple.  That’s because mistake #6 is a common one that is easily corrected.  You simply have to ask yourself one question, “Do I eat too much energy food (e.g., energy bars, drinks and gels)?”  You may be wondering, how will I know?  The simple answer is that if you use energy bars and drinks other than right before, during or immediately after exercise, you are probably using them too frequently.  There is no substitute for healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  Nutritionally speaking, many energy bars are no healthier than your average candy bar.  Most energy drinks are effective at carbohydrate and electrolyte replacement, but offer little additional nutritive value.  Use these for training and events, but eat real food when it comes to your meals.
